I was on the hunt for a really simple basic 1×1 rib hat pattern and stumbled upon this one. I was intrigued by some Ravelry folks’ review of the hat as it has a clever cast-on and crown decrease. Come to find out both of those things may have been a bit cleverer than I! This has was a challenge…mostly due to the color of yarn I chose (you can hardly see anything when knitting in black!) as well as the decreases that, however clever, do not allow for the many interruptions that come with having 2 kids around!
Pattern: Mawson Hat by Brooklyn Tweed
Yarn: Simplinatural by HiKoo in Black (40% baby alpaca, 40% Merino, 20% Silk…this yarn is the bomb!!)
Mods: None (Unless you count re-doing it 3 times :p )
Notes: I had to cast on several times to get the hang of the ribbing cast-on…but I have to say it was worth it as the brim is super professional looking with the ribbing coming all the way down to the edge.
I knit the body of the hat to about 7″ before starting my decreases. I HIGHLY recommend putting in a lifeline before you start the decreasing! If you mess up it’s nearly impossible to remember where you are and the ribbing is really hard to get back on the needles. The decreases essentially consist of slipping stitches off and back on about a million times before you actually make a decrease…it takes some getting used to…and that being said I still consider myself a new(er) knitter…so take that as you will!
I love this hat though…it really is the perfect ribbed hat…it’s also reversible (due to the fancy decreasing) which is really nice I think! I’ll be making another because my husband won’t share with me 🙂 .
